Abbeydale Brewery x Ridgeside Brewery – Wayward Son

An illustration by Lewy for an American Style Wheat Beer

Did you know that Kansas grows the most wheat of anywhere in the world?! Bonus beer points for getting the reference in the name of this collaboration made with Ridgeside Brewery. An American style wheat beer, dry hopped with Galaxy, Amarillo, and Lemondrop. Expect a plethora of fruity esters coupled with subtle orange and citrus flavours and a gentle, low-level bitterness. Also, wheat. Lots of wheat.

The craft beer can artwork was inspired by Supernatural, an American dark fantasy television series created by Eric Kripke. I’ve been a Supernatural fan from series 1 which premiered in 2005. The theme tune for Supernatural is Carry on My Wayward Son by Kansas. I thought a nod to Supernatural and one of the main characters (Dean with a hop head) and Baby – (the gorgeous 1967 Chevy Impala) was a very suiting vision given the beer style and the name. If I could have my dream car – then Dean’s (Played by Jensen Ackles, who also has his own craft brewery) Impala would be it!

The piece was sketched in pencil, then inked with Indian ink, scanned and coloured digitally with a Wacom tablet.

Part of the Abbeydale Collab Series – Part One and Two

Each series had 6 collaboration beers with 6 other breweries that were available in 440ml Can as well as Keg and Cask.
There were 12 beers in total in each series, with a year in between each series.

The can artwork for each beer joined together so the end beer drinker could peel and join the labels to make one big piece of artwork:
